about CESSI

Institute for comparative social research (CESSI) is an independent survey research company, one of the first in Russia initiated population surveys based on representative national probability samples face-to-face and by telephone.

 

The founder and director of CESSI is leading Russian sociologist, internationally recognized expert in population surveys methodology and comparative surveys Vladimir Andreenkov.

The CESSI team consists of scholars on population surveys, design and adaptation of questionnaires for different survey modes, types and cultures, sample design and data processing. The field group of CESSI headed by Olga Karetnikova coordinates the data collection, training of interviewers and field managers and quality control all over the country. The CESSI researchers study life values and attitudes in Russia and other countries, the social indicators to study social transformations and changes, demographic trends, issues of ageing and health, education and labor.

 

CESSI specializes in large-scale or in-depth sociological projects with major academic or social and governing impact. During more than 30 years, it cooperated with leading sociological research centers and academic organizations all over the world. CESSI is a regular winner of international and Russian competitions for academic and social grants.

 

Since the foundation in March 1989, the Institute has implemented more than 5 thousands research projects of different scope. The examples of some of them are listed below.

«Life course of generation transitioned to adulthood in 1990-s” – the unique academic study of life time of one generation supported by the Russian Scientific Fund in 2023-2025. It aims to study the life course of generations who entered the adult life in time of rapid socio-economic and political transformations in Russia in 1990-s using different research methods – continuation of the annual panel RUSSET-1990-s after 30 years, autobiographies, in-depth and cognitive interviews.

“Ethnic-cultural groups of Russia – life course in autobiographies” 2024-2026 – the cross-cultural comparative study of life course of different ethnic groups within Russia – ethnic Russians, Siberian groups, Volga groups and Caucasians.

National survey of elderly people (NSEP) – the panel survey of the Russian population of 50 years old and over based on the national probability random sample by face-to-face interviews in respondent’s homes. It is conducted in cooperation with HSE and its financial support in 2021-2023. The survey covers multiple topics and domains of elderly’s life including health and health services, family relations and social contacts, material situation and pension provision, cognitive abilities and mental health, social wellbeing and values. It is comparable with SHARE – the comparative survey of ageing in Europe.

«Post-Soviet Trends» – comparative cross-national trend survey of attitudes, behavior, living conditions and quality of life in countries of the post-Soviet region, based on regular national probability random population surveys, 2003-2022.

«Values transformation and subjective quality of life: regional perspective” – the comparative survey of Russian regions, 2019-2022 (principal investigators are E. Ponarin and A. Almakaeva, HSE, Russia). The data was collected by telephone interviews on a random sample of the population of 60 Russian regions on a broad range of social indicators – personal and international trust, moral norms, political attitudes and behavior, gender roles and life values. CESSI provided methodological support, sample design and implemented the fieldwork and data preparation of the survey.

«Consequences of digitalization in education and science” – the study of issues, barriers and consequences of digitalization and implementation of other advanced technologies in secondary and high education and science”, 2020-2024 (principal investigator prof. A.V. Noskova, MGIMO). CESSI provided methodological support and data collection in quantitative and qualitative parts of the project.

“Social value of fairness in Russia’ – the long-years research project to study different aspects of fairness – theoretical, methodological and empirical. It covers the issues of understanding and significance in different population groups, criteria of fairness in different life domains, evaluation of fairness in Russian society, the impact of perception of fairness on political, social and interpersonal relations (the principal investigators are V. Rimskiy and V. Andreenkov). The project was implemented with the support of different research grants («Public demand for fairness and its provision for the government») and using different research methods including qualitative (focus-groups, IDIs) and qualitative (personal interviews on national sample, online panel surveys) in 2015-2024.

European value survey (EVS) and World Value survey (WVS) 2017 in Russia - a part of large-scale international comparative project (principal investigators in Russia are N. Soboleva, HSE and E. Ponarin, HSE). CESSI provided methodological support, sample design and implemented the fieldwork and data preparation of the survey for inclusion in joint international database.

«Language situation in post-Soviet countries” – the comparative study of languages knowledge, skills, language identification and multilingualism in 12 post-Soviet countries (principal investigator A. V. Andreeenkova). The study was based on quantitative measurements in national surveys (included in Post-soviet trends project) in 2012-2016.

Monitoring «Values and interests of Russian population” – trend survey about social attitudes, values and behavior of Russians based on national surveys of population (principal investigator N.I. Lapin, Institute of philosophy RAN). CESSI provided methodological support, sample design and implemented the fieldwork and data preparation of the survey in 2006-2016.

Global Religious Futures survey – large-scale cross-national survey of religious beliefs, practices and moral norms of Pew Center 2016-2017. CESSI was responsible for sample design, fieldwork and data preparation in 7 countries – Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Latvia and Georgia.

Monitoring of global and ecological issues and corporate social responsibility – cross-national trend survey to track the perception of global issues, ecological problems and ecological behavior as well as image of major industries and social responsibility of international and domestic companies over time organized by GlobeScan (Canada). CESSI was the Russian partner of the project since its beginning and conducted annual national population surveys from 1999 to 2017.

“Perception of democracy, rule of law and everyday judicial practices” – the trend survey of dynamic and stability in the evaluation of democracy, knowledge, experience and evaluation of the legal system and its different institutions – courts, police, lawyers, laws, NGOs and mass media (the principal investigators are prof. Debra Javeline and prof. Vanessa Baird). CESSI provided methodological support, sample design and implemented the annual fieldwork and data preparation of the population survey on random sample in 12 Russian cities, the survey among lawyers and NGO from 2003 to 2005.

Exit Polls in Russia and then in some other countries in the post-Soviet region: Referendum about the trust to the government of 1993 – first Exit Poll in Russia in cooperation with CBS), exit-polls in Parliamentary elections and Presidential elections since 1993 – in cooperation with Mitofsky International.

«Moral and religious beliefs and values of Russian population» - time-trend survey of the changes in religious beliefs, religious practices and moral norms, and also the study of dynamic of general social attitudes and values using WVS methodology (comparable with WVS) (principal investigators are K. Kaariainen, Helsinki University, Finland and V. Andreenkov, CESSI, Russia). The project was based on national Russian population surveys using face-to-face interviews in respondent’s homes in 1993, 1996, 1999, 2002 and 2005 and boost samples in “Muslim regions” (Tatarstan in 1999, Tatarstan, Kabardino-Balkaria and Dagestan in 2002; Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Kabardino-Balkaria and Dagestan in 2005).

“Youth and the Future” – the trend study of attitudes, beliefs, fairs and expectations of teenagers in Russia and 10 other countries of the former USSR. It covers the issues of international relations, image of Russia and USA, nuclear threat, and also life plans and life scenarios of teenagers (principal investigators are John Robinson, Maryland University, USA and V.G. Andreenkov, CESSI, Russia). Several studies were conducted from 1992 to 1996.

CESSI in RSS

First round of RCSI in Russia was conducted in 2006 within the ESS group on the organization and financial support of CESSI. In other rounds the project got the financial support of Russian academic research funds and research institutions with part financing of CESSI.

 

The international experience of Russia and cooperation with leading Russian and international research centers, experience of conducting more than 5000 research projects helped to implement RCSI on the most advanced methodological specifications and high quality standards.

 

Each round of RCSI requires the work of more than 30 researchers, 300 interviewers and 70 field managers in different regions of the country. Professional and devoted work of the RCSI field team is the main reason for the project’s success.
