TIME TRENDS IN RUSSIA IN COMPARISON WITH OTHER COUNTRIES – ESS – EUROPEAN SOCIAL SURVEY

 

RSS – academic survey of social dynamic and major indicators of Russian society. It monitors attitudes, opinions, values and behavior of Russians every two year in comparison with other European countries (ESS survey).

CESSI

Institute for comparative social research (CESSI) conducts sociological surveys of high methodological standards in Russia and other countries in the post-Soviet region since 1989. The director of CESSI is leading Russian survey research methodologist Vladimir Andreenkov.

Major goals of RSS:

 

  • Study change in social, economic and political life of Russia over time in comparison with other countries.

  • Regular measure of key indicators of social progress – attitudes, opinions, beliefs, values and also behavior in different domains of social life – demographic, civic, labor, material, political.

  • Develop and implement advanced methods and standards of population surveys and comparative survey methodology.

  • Obtain empirical data of high quality for reliable and scientifically rigorous time comparisons and countries comparisons.

  • Create general scientific infrastructure – empirical data in free access for researchers and broader public – for extensive data analysis and referencing other empirical data with baseline survey of high standards and reputation.

2006 year.

 

Data collection

 

The survey is conducted every two years in earlier years and every three years in recent times. Nine rounds were completed in – 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2021 и 2024. The numbering of rounds starts from 3rd round (2006) to make it easy to related with comparable ESS data (started at 2002).

 

Sample

 

2000-2500 respondents in each round by representative national probability random sample of population 15 years old and over.

 

Data

 

Free access to the data and survey documentation for all researchers and the broader public. The results of RCSS are located in www.cessi.ru – direct transfer from website www.russiansocialsurvey.ru. Data of ESS on European countries can be found on the website www.europeansocialsurvey.org.

 

Managing of the project

The project is managed by the Scientific Council of RCSI. The head of the Council is Vladimir Magun, cand. of pshych.sc., head of laboratories in the Institute of Sociology FNITS RAN and NII HSE. Members of the Council: Vladimir Andreenkov, cand. phil.sc., director of CESSI, Oksana Sinyavskaya, cand. econ. sc., vice director of the Institute of social policy of NII HSE, Ludmila Belyaeva, doc. Social.sc., leading researcher of the Institute of philosophy RAN.

Financial support

Scientific Council of RSS, project team and project users are deeply grateful to organizations which provided and continue to provide financial support of the projects.

Russian scientific fund – RGNF (Russian humanitarian scientific fund), RFFI (Russian fund of fundamental research) were one of the first who recognized the importance of the project and provided the financial support.

The NRU Highest School of Economics (HSE) provided continuous scientific and financial support to the project. Researchers and students of HSE are regular users of project data, they are used in several dozens of research papers published in leading academic journals, the data of RSS are used in education process and programs.

Rules of citations

Russian social survey – the time-trend survey of the Russian population 15 years old and over, conducted by CESSI (Institute for comparative social research) every two years since 2006. Each round of the survey is based on the representative probability random sample of the Russian population interviewed face-to-face in respondent’s homes. The methodological specification and standards of the survey is designed and implemented to provide reliable comparative data with other countries included in the European social survey (ESS).
